My Operations Manager in school caned 2 boys in the assembly yesterday. It has been a long time since I witnessed a public caning.
The 1st Malay boy was involved in more than 10 theft cases in school. Not sure what he as stolen but he was given 2 strokes of the cane.
The 2nd one was a chinese boy, well known for his ADHD condition. My colleague, who happened to be his form teacher, told me that this boy once went up to the front of the class and played with his mucus. He almost let it drip and sniffed it back again. He would have saliva all over his books and pls dun be alarmed if you received a wet book from him.
I wonder how the rest of the class is reacting? Are they aware of his condition and has already tried to give in or are they not and felt he was really a nuisance?
I asked myself. The ministry has always wanted it to be a inclusive learning environment for all our children. But are we really doing them good by being inclusive?
Obviously, this boy with ADHD has a hard time trying to cope with his work. And I believe to a certain extent, his classmates are affected and he has disturbed their learning.
But as a parent, it is always very hard to accept the fact that your child is born in a way with he/she is different from the rest. Putting the boy is a special sch may not be the best option too as he may not be that serious to be enrolled there. But on the other hand, can this boy even cope in the mainstream school?
Our society seems to not have such a place to cater to these children. But luckily, I know of a place which operates privately and caters to kids with such problems.
Bridge Learning (Click on the link to find out more)
They have programmes designed to help such kids with learning disabilities. Those of you who encounter kids with such problems might want to give the webby to the parents to take a look.
As for the Malay boy, I guess a counsellor will be good enuff.. Sometimes, it might be due to the family background. Whichever it is, it is NOT right to steal from your friends. I can't imagine if he is not taught the correct moral values now. What happen when he grows up?
I do not want to think that far now.
